About Murray Blair

Murray Blair's family emigrated from Scotland to Australia in the 1940s. Taught to pipe by his father, Donald Blair OAM, Murray grew up playing in the local Warrnambool pipe band before joining the renowned Victoria Police Pipe Band, with whom he recorded the albums Uphold the Right, Live in Ballymena (Ireland), Live in the Rockies (USA) and Masterblasters. The band won the Grade 1 World Pipe Band Championships in 1998 — a contest at which six of the band's nine tunes were Murray's own compositions, later published in his tune book Philharmonic. On the solo boards he won the Silver Medal for Piobaireachd at the RU Brown competition, before focal dystonia brought his competitive piping to an end. He remained active in the piping community as a founding member of the Victorian Pipers Association.

BBC-trained as an audio engineer, Murray relocated to Scotland in 2004 to commercially record piping albums, going on to produce 28 piping and pipe band albums for broadcasters and record labels worldwide. His broadcast work has taken him to remote locations across Africa, Asia and Australia, and to venues including New York's Lincoln Center and Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall.

Now based in Melbourne, Murray combines his musical and technical expertise to develop piping technology: the Blair Digital Chanter, the HBT range of bagpipe tuners, a Bagpipe Tuner App, and the Bagpiper Case, co-founded with Ian Lyons.
